A Photographer Documents the Struggles of Refugees in Lesbos, Greece









“Is this Europe?” That’s the question German photographer Kai Löffelbein heard again and again from refugees landing on the island of Lesbos, Greece, this past fall, where 2–4,000 migrants and refugees were arriving daily. So catastrophic is the situation there that, after dire sea crossings in leaky boats helmed by armed smugglers, many arrivals doubt they’ve come to the right place.

Light Projections Bring Color and Lost Glory to the Temple of Dendur









We recognize the Temple of Dendur today as a monochromatic sandstone structure, but its walls, like those of most ancient Egyptian temples, were originally painted bright colors. Time and weather have scrubbed the temple of its many pigments, similarly to how the elements have whitened so many sculptures from antiquity.

Now available for rent on Airbnb is a full-size, 3D replica of Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting “The Bedroom” (1889), complete with rustic twin bed, pale violet walls, copper-green wood floor, and straw hat on a peg. Created by the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC), the installation part of a promotion for the exhibition Van Gogh’s Bedrooms, centered around three paintings he created while living in his “Yellow House” in France, from 1888 to 1889.
